Tonya along with her parents and her twin sister Tamara escaped to the forests of Korvan mountain.  There the wizard Zedd spread a shield over the village and is surrounding area protecting the exiles.

One day Tonya and Tamara walked out of the area unknowingly and their parents came looking for them to bring them back.  A brigade of the Imperial Order were hunting for exiles, both Drakelords and Mord Syths on their dragons when they spied the girls.  The girls saw almost in time and turned to run back to the protection and met their parents coming after them.  Their parents fought valiantly with their swords but the Drakelords overpowered their father, mother and Tonya as Tamara made it inside the protection thinking her family were right behind her and all would be safe.  They were not, they were taken to the Queen at Thandac...

Tonya was broken by the Mord Syth Arianna, or was she, she begged for her parents to be killed and not sent to the mines so hard that that exactly the opposite was done and they were sent to the mines.  Tonya must become what she hates most and that is a Mord Syth if only to keep her parents alive and not have to kill them herself.  But her sister, Tamara, was out there somewhere and what would become of her.
