A former soldier who was retired due to a leg injury suffered in battle. He was personally saved by the king whose unit happened upon his when it was being overrun.  He took the wound when defending a fellow soldier from an attack from behind (the king but he didn't know it at the time). The king never made it known but showed his thanks in other ways. Such as a proper apprenticeship as a Smith.

He later became a blacksmith who worked as one of the castle forges which meant he was one of the best smiths around.
