Background:
James Hamilton was born in 1781 in Plymouth, Devon, the second son of a prestigious naval family. The Hamilton ancestral home overlooked Plymouth Sound, and young James spent much if his childhood watching the tall ships sail in and out from the harbour. It was inevitable that when he was old enough, James was enrolled into the Royal Naval Academy with the hope that he might distinguish himself and bring honour to the family name.
