Rick lived and grew up in King County, Georgia. In high school, Rick was friends with Lori and Shane Walsh(His best Friend). Eventually, Rick and Lori started dating and fell in love. Right after High School the 2 got married Shane was Rick's best man, eventually they had their first and thus far only child Carl. They lived as a typical family, of course like all families there were arguments, disagreements, but Rick was a proud SOuthern Gentleman, he kept most of the screaming or harsh thoughts and words to himself.

Days before the initial outbreak, Shane and Rick(both working for the Sheriff's office, answered a call. There were reported to be 2 gunmen in a vehicle they were chasing as they caught them and tried to take care of them, a third gunman appeared and shot Rick, Shane quickly apprehended the culprit but Rick was in terrible shape, as Rick was rushed to the Hospital, Shane stayed with him for a while, then went to tell his Friends Lori and Carl about Rick.  They all rushed back to the hospital, where Rick was completely out, he was prepped for surgery, but Lori and Shane were told that the odds of his survival was thin.  After close to 8 hours in surgery the doctor approached them and told them Rick made it through the surgery, but his hasn't woken up. The next few days he was still not able to wake up, Lori and Carl stayed with Rick the entire time, while Shane was there as much as he could be.

Finally when Rick woke up, he called for Lori, Carl, Shane, And nurses or doctors, but the place was in shambles, he made his way to his feet to discover no one was there at all, no nurses, doctors, friends, or other patients. He called out, got dressed and looked around and found no one, after looking for what seemed like a eternity he finally heard some noise, and ran into his first few Walkers, with no weapons to defend himself, he ran out. he saw the parking lot was ransacked, he continued toward his and Lori's home on foot, as he didn't have his car or anything, finally after passing and surviving the trek, he got home calling for his wife and son, there were no signs of them, there was missing clothes, food, pictures and the like but no signs of them or any signs of notes as to where they had gone, he left, and came across a young black boy, he tried to approach him, but was struck in the head with a shovel.

When he came to he met Morgan and his son Duane. Morgan told him a bit of what had taken place, Rick then took them both to the Sheriff's department, and they all got cleaned up, and Rick handed Morgan a walkie-talkie telling him he plans on heading toward Atlanta to find his family, but he would turn his walkie on for a few minutes each morning so that is Morgan and his son decided to finally head toward him he could contact him, he grabbed a large duffle bag filled with various guns, and alot of ammo, he also pocket a grenade, and then he took a Sheriff car, and headed out toward Atlanta.

On the road to Atlanta his car ran out of gas, he was about 20 miles away from the city itself, he grabbed his bag, and a gas can and headed down the road to try to get gas, he finally came across a farm, as he tried to locate anyone on the propert, he finally discovered no one was alive, he couldn't get any gas from any vehicles as they were already emptied before, but he did locate a horse, as he saddled and got the horse ready, he then got on the horse and continued toward Atlanta.
