Sir Gareth is the youngest son of King Lot and Morgause, King Arthur's half-sister, thus making him Arthur's nephew, as well as brother to Gawain, Agravain, and Gaheris, and a  half-brother of Mordred.

Gareth wanted to prove himself worthy of knighthood through his deeds instead of just his lineage. So, when he arrived at Camelot in disguise as a kitchen boy without a name or a past. He is set to work by Sir Kay, who always gives him difficult work, teases him as a lowly kitchen boy and nicknames him "Beaumains" or "Good Hands". A year later his task is over.

A woman (Lady Lynette)  shows up in Camelot and asks Arthur to send a knight to rescue an unknown woman. No knight will accept the challenge so Gareth asks permission which Arthur grants. Gareth has a horse, armor, and sword but no shield and spear. Kay is angry and chases him. Lancelot follows to try and stop Kay. When they meet, Gareth defeats Kay and takes his shield and spear. Then he fights to a draw with Lancelot, who knights Gareth because of how well he fought. Meanwhile, Lynette takes Gareth as a mere kitchen boy and constantly derides him while they are on the quests. Gareth defeats bandits and renegade knight along the way and he eventually rescues Lynette’s sister Lyonesse..

Gareth is immediately smitten with Lyonesse.
