Lani Talanoa is tall for a woman standing at six feet. She wears a simple dress almost everywhere, though her current one seems to be getting shorter and shorter as she needs to patch holes in her sails. She has dark hair chopped off at about shoulder length. As her hair grabs the wind, she tangles it back in a haphazard series of dreds to keep it out of the way. She is almost always barefoot, unless she needs to walk on volcanic rock. She keeps a barbed short spear at hand and a medicine bag slung across her body.

Lani’s boat has become a catamaran, though it started its life as an outrigged canoe. The two hulls are more narrow than most owing to Lani’s urgency in building pieces. It mounts two masts with lanteen sails, one larger than the other. It has a mandala painted on the high prow depicting a stylized version of the star wreath constellation.
There is a platform between the two hulls, but it’s also more narrow than usual. The rigid space is only in place for cooking. Most of the space between the hulls is netting, with a couple of rigid supports providing structure. The netting is where Lani usually sleeps.
