Background: Roan is a "skinner," a bioengineered human imprinted with particular skills and used as slave labor. Along with a few of his fellow skinners, he organized a revolt and escaped from the mining colony on Tannhauser-VI in the remote regions of imperial space. He found his way to Akir based on some strange, hazy memories shared by him and the other skinners he befriended.
