Suggestions & Announcements VI

Always read new posts in this thread, but only reply here if you have useful and on-topic input.

This thread is for GM announcements and player suggestions and feedback.  If you have any ideas for new threads or games, this is the place to post them.  If you have any public suggestion about the function of ASWOT, post it here.  Any new game proposal may get a new thread that will have "Testing - <game name>" as the thread name until we decide whether it is indeed worthy to get beyond testing or whether is should go to the pile of "been there, tried that" threads.  If your suggestion is for GM eyes only, use a PM, not this thread.

Like the Hall of Fame, this thread is not required for Royalty or NoLife claims.

This thread is more tightly controlled than others.  Please only post here if you have useful and on-topic input.

Unresolved suggestions:

So far, I believe our zombie trudge is going well, and possibly could last to the next thread, at least as far as Athena is concerned.

The "vote out" rule for INCDEC seems too complicated.  I'd suggest that you just be allowed to remove a player when they haven't voted in at least X time.  X could be measured in days/weeks, or in posts.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

I accept the In the Future name change vote, after all I already changed the current thread of it to 2014...

For the RTJ, I'm not certain, as I've noticed some actually LOOK for an RTJ thread before joining...   I'll stay out of that vote

INCDEC sounds like it should have days till removal; posts vary greatly by activity, making it easily plausible they would be kicked out over the course of just a few hours, or never be removed at all.

Acronym Conversation, don't we have two games similar to this same concept?

New Word Plus is to complicated, the thread itself has more votes to take it down than it has actual game play.  There were people voting it down in 2011, I think it's time has come

As for picture games, I concur, to likely that somebody could slip virus material into those games to begin with.  Than sometimes the links just don't work, and you have to find another picture.

In reply to Yoss (msg # 3):

I don't agree with the outside picture suggestion.  Closed Captioning is one of the best.  The inclusion of outside pictures is used in almost every game on RPoL.  The idea that it could lead to a virus is not realistic, and the violator would be instantly removed anyway.  Plus, I think we all know each other enough that it's not like clicking on a random link.

What I do is put the pictures on PhotoBucket.  So though it is an "outside" link, it is to my own picture.  If you limit the rule to those types of pictures (i.e., not allowed to post pictures that link to third party sites), I'd be fine with it.  I can understand if it links to a third party's picture that could change or be turned into a virus at some point.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

I have a game concept, it's simple really...  While we have games to add/remove/change words, and sentences.  Why don't we have a game where we may re-order the word/sentence.  A scrabble type game in which you perhaps start with the word 'estate' and come out with the word 'taste' removing or adding one letter, and moving about three or more letters to form another word.  If no word can be made than you must post a fresh word with six or more letters.  What do the rest of you think?

And yes, we can reopen a new game if there is enough interest in it.  The only reason games are closed at all is (1) so No Lifers don't just waste their time on something not being played, and (2) to keep the active games up front.

So I'd say if you get 3 or 4 people interested in a certain game, we'd reopen a closed one.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Manipulating Jeopardy was actually a tad intentional, but it was because those are the only questions I can think of, archive based Weekly, or Royal questions...    which actually still fit very well into the play of an ASWOT Jeopardy spin off.

As for the wheel, i've noticed the actual money aspect is not really in play, even though people roll the dice, vowels cost nothing and we don't count the cash in the end.  I'm pretty sure it's just as much like hangman as it would be without the dice...   Especially since there are some posts that don't even have a roll.  Don't know on that one, but I'd say the original hangman premise is better than the wheel

Don't much like wheel of fortune anyway >.>

regarding msg #37 by Yoss

"Vote out" seems a little hard with so few, I would say "Time till ejection" is more appropriate, though a week may be a bit harsh, though I realize that is the norm for rpol.  Perhaps thirty days till removal?

On an alternative note; Is it possible we could make a phrase association game?  My family tends to play word association until it becomes phrase association.  It's the same game really but instead of

1;night

2;day

It would be more along the lines of

2; The dog ate

1; The cat sat

2; The cow played

and so on...   Of course these are mind numbingly simple ways of playing it, but it was the quickest thing I could think of at the moment.  Our house tends to play for around an hour on this game before we get bored even with just three people playing.  I can only imagine how long the game would last on ASWOT...

It's not exactly like that either, it's just straight up any phrase any order in my mind.

Another example is actually what brought this idea to mind when me and athena were playing word association and I slipped out of words for a second

Athena; Gaia

GPT; The Thirteen Great Spirits

Athena; more than one word

GPT; Phrase

If Gaia had been 'the god gaia' and phrase had been phrase association it would have fit in with the thought process I have.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

I was wondering have these two games ever appeared:

1) Scenes from a hat from Whose Line

2)A game from China.
For a group of say.... 6 players
Before starting the game, each player will be given a word. Only one of them will be given a word different from others, but similar.
E.g.
1PS3
2PS3
3PS3
4PS3
5XBOX360
6PS3

And then, each player will one by one make a statement on the word they receive.

E.g.
1You play games on it
2It's black... well, most of the time
3It's not the first of its kind
4It's outdated now
5It is famous for its shooter
6It is.... um...heavy

In this step, the 5 player objective is to identify the outsider(Named the "Spy") and the Spy need to try not to be detected.
Usually it is smarter to be vague on the statement as you couldn't know if you are the spy on the first round.

Afterward, the players will need to vote on kicking out one player. Ties are resolved by re-vote on the highest voted players.

If the Spy is kicked out, the other players wins the game.
If not, then the remaining player start again from the step where the each gives a statement.
The spy wins if after a vote, there is only him and another player in the game.

I suppose if we play in here, we would need a GM to distribute the words and to monitor the vote and see if the game is over.

Not only that but you would need to determine how many players there are at every start.  Then again we have what...   three, four max people who would even play.  We may need to resurrect a few more people before we start that game, but it's a good idea.  *starts smacking inactive people*

We try to have all ASWOT games be "come and go as you please" kind of games, so the idea for "Find the Spy" would need some changes before it would work in our format.  We do have some hidden-information games here, but they all revolve around having only one player at a time that has hidden information that everyone else is working together to discover.

I'm not familiar with "Scenes From a Hat".  Could you fill me in?

I would like to make a suggestion for a game similar to the share the love, but not quite. Thanksgiving inspired, I suppose you could say, although it would apply to everyday. "Giving Thanks" - "I'm thankful for..." and fill in the blank. The only requirement would be that it can't be sarcastic. :)
It's good to be thankful for the little things in life, and would be a great thread to have to post in for NO LIFE, especially if you were having a bad day, I think.

Alphabet UNO Conversation

Play as the alphabet conversation, but before every post, a person must roll a 1d30, then they must copy/paste that result into the top of their reply, or at least the one word that corresponds to whatever was rolled.
1-22 Normal = Next letter of the alphabet as normal
23-24 Reverse = Reverse direction e.g. ZYX, etc.
25-26 Skip = Skip the next letter of the alphabet
27-28 Force = Post as normal, but at the end of your post you get to say what letter the next person's post will start with.
29 Wild = You get to choose to start your post with whatever letter you want.
30 Wild Force = You get to choose to start your post with whatever letter you want and at the end of your post you get to say what letter the next person's post will start with.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Right, so having finally returned, I'm thinking of replacing the Festival (which never did take off, though it seems to have had a chance during the juggling while I was gone), and would like some reactions to possible replacements.
My thought is that part of what went wrong with the festival is lack of focus - too much space, not enough to bring people together.

So, what I think might work:
Spaceship - we've done this a couple times, though I'm thinking something other than the H.M.S. Timewaster. This is good because it brings everyone into one spot, but allows infinite variety. This also has the advantage of offering an easy transition - something happens at the Festival, forcing everyone onto the ship.

Bowling Alley / Restaurant / Pool - returning to roots; these are the first three locations we have records of, and they eventually produced the others. I'm also considering a bar. The key is that it's a fairly restricted, focused environment, and one that might have regulars providing a sort of unique culture. Difficulty here is how to get everyone there.

Return of the Roadtrip - that crazy teleporting bus allowed all sorts of odd things to happen, and shares the easy transition of the spaceship.

Do any of these sound tempting to anyone? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions?

For reference, these are the threads we've had since I started operating them (I used to remember where the start of each line came from, but I've since forgotten, and apparently never included it in my scratchpad. I consider some variation of any of them valid if people are interested (for other than nostalgia reasons) because I think its safe to say it would be all new to most participants at this time.

I got an idea called "Icons" or "Name that..." how it is played is easy someone does a symbol using letters or number or things above the numbers to create a picture. the next person that posts tells what the pic is then does a new one....

ex: player a
:-)

player b

a smiley face

8=>

player a
a nerd with a smiley face with a runny nose

o.O'

...and so on.

I know we do, I post in that thread. An example of the game is:

Person 1: Do you like cheese?
Person 2: It's alright, not my favourite food but still good.

Have you ever been abroad?
Person 3: Unfortunately not...

And so on.

I have a suggestion for another game. I call it Provide No Context. There are no winners nor losers. We simply write unusual statements that we have read recently. We do not explain where we read them, and we do not attempt to explain why anyone would write such as thing.

I'll give an example that I read only minutes ago.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

So, I've been slowly working at getting new people to play here, mostly by bumping the game ad with the highest frequency I can remember. I was wondering, if anyone has any ideas to get more interest going? Perhaps new games? Getting rid of old ones that nobody likes anymore? Anything that could help would be appreciated, no matter how long you've been here!

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Im new here and the only suggestions I can offer, which are things I think would be cool, may or may not influence new players to join:

-yes a cleanup of games would be good, also some new ones would also be cool
-bring back the marketplace, it was disappointing to see it was dead when I joined, also I understand the upkeep is probably long and boring, however this will likely keep poeple more active
-keep bumping the ad, if i knew this game existed sooner, i would have joined it instantly, and probably been a few months cringier than i am now...
-have rewards for new players, maybe something to do with the marketplace? like a free starting package?

Thats all for now, hope this helped

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Okay, I like all of those ideas. We need to figure out a way to keep track of everyone's WoTs that doesn't take up much of anyone's time. Maybe we can start a new thread for it, and everyone keeps a sort of checkbook of purchases? The Keeper of the Hall is a bygone position that I wouldn't thrust onto anyone, but it's open if someone wants it... Lol

Any ideas for games to get rid of? Or new ones to replace them? They don't even necessarily have to be games, just threads that would need a specific place to talk about, like the Spoilers thread.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

My suggestion regarding pruning old threads is to keep a "Master list of games" which could include the name and rules of any game and a status (active, being there is a current unlocked thread for the game, and inactive, being the game does not have an open thread) and potentially allow players to request new games be created/opened - maybe someone suggests it open and a second person agrees, then open it up. Then, go through and any games that hasn't had a post this year gets pruned.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a royalty of the board reset or update, if we're going to bring back WoTs, maybe each "crowning" could get an allotment of WoTs as well as a prize.

For the WoTs/Marketplace, we could even do a separate thread for "wallets" where everyone participating could keep their wallet updated in a single post for each person and then a market place for purchases. An even more complicated crafting system could also be devised, but that's probably more time then anyone wants to waste on it.

Regarding bumping the ad, I'm not a huge fan of the bumper cars game, just because it has such a long delay, it doesn't feel quite like it fits. I remember back 6 years ago, the best part of ASWoT was that I could post in a game, and by the time I loaded the game menu, someone else often would have already posted.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

I agree with qyv on the bumper car arena thing, i never really got the point..
I think having a system for marketplace where people carry their own is important,Wallets sound good, markeetplace will keep people coming back
i am fine with whatever pruning system you come up with, doesnt affect me as i havent been here long, nor made threads
i am tempted to ask for the role of keeper of the hall, but then i remember that i have a life (jokes aside about having a life, im just lazy :3)
tbh i didnt even know we had crafting here! No need to make it complicated, if some avid minecrafter (not me) wants to campaign for one in the future, so be it.
To increase pure numbers of activity, a spam thread would help, double-posts would be allowed, though this might be against rpol rules, idk.. if these were to be made, i would for one take part avidly, but you may want to lower the WOTS/post in that particular thread

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Well, I can't open a thread just for wallets because then it couldn't be used for No Life, and that's not gonna work. We could either have people keep quoting and adjusting an original wallet post every time someone buys something, or they could keep it in their description with a detailed accounting of everything they've bought.

The Bumper Car Arena has been around for forever, so I don't know what else can be done with it, but I'm open to ideas. I like the concept, but yeah, I get that there are problems inherent in the design. How did it work before? People used to get No Life with it, but that was a looooong time ago now... Lol

There's no rule against double posting, it's just typically considered bad form, unless you've waited awhile and have something else to say. So a thread like that might be kinda weird.

I'm open to all sorts of suggestions for games as long as there isn't something else close to it around.

Froggychum:
I agree with qyv on the bumper car arena thing, i never really got the point..

Bumper car arena is to encourage people to continue to bump our advertisement.  It's actually one of the most utilitarian of our "game" threads because it reminds you to advertise.  People don't join if they don't know we're here.

quote:
I think having a system for marketplace where people carry their own is important,Wallets sound good, markeetplace will keep people coming back

Every new thread should be able to have someone post to it with something meaningful.  Any thread that would mean some players would not participate (for anything other than lack of desire) should be discouraged.
quote:
i am fine with whatever pruning system you come up with, doesnt affect me as i havent been here long, nor made threads

As for "pruning," this should be limited to "closing" a thread that has not been used in a while, but which can then be revived if someone asks for it back.  Pruning should not be used to actually delete threads unless the GMs agree it needs to be done for RPoL reasons.

quote:

Double posts are allowed already.  I have often done this if I have something to say.  Just don't get annoying about it and don't post just to increase numbers.

The "activity" level should never be a substitute for quality.

Re: Suggestions & Announcements VI

Moving this discussion to the real Suggestions thread.

RabbitBall:
How much interest would there be for a pun thread? Would it be o-pun for business, or cause to be sent to a pun-itentiary?

Grant:
If you can come up with some sort of 'rules' for a pun thread, so that there's a bit of a point to the game, then sure, I'll put up a thread for testing.

RabbitBall:
How about this?

The player must come up with a pun on the topic that the previous poster suggested. Then that player posts a topic for the next person to make a pun from. The pun does not have to use the exact wording of the topic, but must be related to the topic chosen.

EXAMPLE: Topic from last post (Player 1) is poetry.

Player 2: Did you hear about the bad poem that was turned into a song and became verse?

New topic: Sheep

Player 3: Don't come to me, I'm taking it on the lamb.

New Topic: teeth

and so on...

Shadow:
Might I suggest that the focus of this proposal be broadened into “word play” which would include not only puns, but double entendres and phonetic mix-ups too.

Froggychum:
Let's broaden it way further and just start writing the Library of Babel

Edit from 2036: Guys this was a huge mistake, it killed the game and several of the players. I think it even took away RabbitBall's sanity! FourLegged stopped posting for months at a time and only occasionally came in to beg us to stop with the madness... I lost myself for a while too in those endless pages of ever-complexifying letter combinations... But in the end, only I was mentally composed enough to come back through my ASWOT-Brand Time Wasting Machine (TM) and warn you all never to use my forbidden idea! Do not listen to the feverish incentives of this barking fool and instead follow a more moderate line! Yes, the user Shadow surely has a sufficient suggestion! NOTHING GOOD WILL COME FROM SEEKING THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GODS IN OUR MERE MORTAL SHELLS!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARN---!!

[Temporal Regression has ended. The future is being adjusted...]

If everyone agrees, I will gladly make a testing thread for Wordplay Association (a play on Word Association, of course).
